She confessed that her own movie gave her a good fright, when she was recording extra dialogue for a scene in which the sound designers had already punched up her earlier screams.

“I literally jumped and screamed inside the looping booth. It frightened me and it shook me up for five minutes … I was like, “Holy sh-t! That was really scary!” she said.

However, she said that there was something liberating in taking on a scary role.

“For me to be able to play something that I would normally be frightened by was really intriguing and interesting. It’s cool to see myself being able to scare people because I’m just a little girl,” said Fox.

Hiv Vaccine, A medical trial in Thailand has raised hopes of a major breakthrough in the fight against Aids after scientists said an experimental vaccine had reduced the risk of HIV infection by a third.

The world’s largest HIV/Aids vaccine trial of more than 16,000 volunteers was the first in which infection has been prevented, according to the US army, which sponsored the trial with the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

A combination of two vaccines was tested on HIV-negative Thai men and women aged 18 to 30 at average risk of becoming infected. All the volunteers were given counselling and condoms to help them avoid HIV. Then half were randomly picked to receive the vaccine, while the other half got dummy shots. Until the trial ended, nobody knew who had been given the genuine vaccine and who had not.

A relatively small number of people became infected with HIV – 51 of the 8,197 people given the vaccine, and in 74 of the 8,198 who received dummy shots – but the difference was statistically significant, which means scientists believe it could not have happened by chance. It worked out at a 31% lower risk of infection for the vaccine group.

Colonel Jerome Kim, who helped to lead the $105m (£64m) study for the US army, said it was “the first evidence that we could have a safe and effective preventive vaccine”.

Recent failures had led many scientists to believe that such a vaccine might not be achievable. In 2007, the drug company Merck abandoned what had looked at the time like the most promising avenue of research after disappointing trial results. Today the National Institute’s director, Dr Anthony Fauci, warned it was “not the end of the road”, but said he was surprised and very pleased by the outcome.

“It gives me cautious optimism about the possibility of improving this result” he said. “This is something that we can do.”

Every day, 7,000 people worldwide are newly infected with HIV; 2 million died of Aids in 2007, the UN agency Unaids estimates.

The Aids Vaccine Advocacy Coalition, an international group that has worked towards developing a vaccine, welcomed the results of the trial, the third major study since 1983, when HIV was identified as the cause of Aids, as “an historic milestone”.

The executive director, Mitchell Warren, said: “There is little doubt that this finding will energise and redirect the Aids vaccine field.”

Frances Gotch, professor of immunology at Imperial College London said the results appeared to be statistically significant and may have been the effect of the two different vaccines working in tandem to more powerful effect.

“The fact that they have seen a response with people with such a low incidence of infection is impressive,” Gotch, who is also the principal investigator for the International Aids Vaccine Initiative, told the Guardian.

“Of course it’s not 100% of people [protected] but 31% could make an enormous difference in the world. I think this is something we can work with.”

Thailand’s ministry of public health conducted the study, which used strains of HIV common in Thailand.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai denied Thursday that major electoral fraud took place last month and urged foreign allies not to interfere over investigations into mounting allegations of vote-rigging.

Afghans went to the polls on August 20 in only their second direct presidential election, but the vote has been overshadowed by massive claims of irregularities and threats of violence by Taliban rebels.

“Media has reported major fraud. It wasn’t that big. If there was fraud, it was small — it happens all over the world,” Karzai told reporters a day after preliminary results gave him 54.6 percent of the vote.

But hundreds of thousands of ballots are being recounted because of fears of electoral fraud, and EU monitors have branded a quarter of the ballots cast as “suspicious” — most of them for Karzai.

“If there is fraud, it has to be investigated, but investigated fairly and without prejudice,” Karzai said.

“I hope our foreign friends respect the people of Afghanistan and let the IEC (Independent Election Commission) and the ECC (Electoral Complaints Commission) fulfil their work without interference.”

The European Union Election Observation Mission to Afghanistan on Wednesday said that they had identified 1.5 million votes which could be fraudulent, with 1.1 of those cast for Karzai.

His campaign office responded furiously, accusing the EU of meddling and damning the announcement as “partial, irresponsible and in contradiction with Afghanistan’s constitution.”

Karzai said Thursday he would respect the results of investigations by the electoral bodies, but there is no timescale yet for the audits and recounts at about 2,500 polling stations, raising fears of protracted political turmoil.

“I rely on it (the IEC) and respect its work,” Karzai said.

The fracas comes as Taliban insurgents are waging a bloody insurgency to topple the government, with threats of militant violence believed to be behind the meagre election turnout of 38.7 percent.

Karzai said, “we had a successful election”, but admitted that threats of violence by the Taliban did impact the polls.

“We promised them security, but we failed to provide them security on election day… but people even then came out to vote,” he said.

Acorn Scandal, The folks at the far-left radical activist group ACORN are embroiled in a financial corruption and cover-up scandal that they managed to keep hidden from their donors and political partners for eight years.

Now their deception has been uncovered for all to see.

But is ACORN’s leadership apologetic? Not in the slightest. “We did what we thought was right,” said the group’s president, Maude Hurd.

ACORN’s founder – whose brother perpetrated the fraud – also defended the cover-up, saying publicity would have given the group’s critics a “weapon.” As if there wasn’t enough ammunition already to discredit ACORN.

The New York Times reports that Dale Rathke – whose brother started the group back in 1970 as a vehicle to help low-income people “take back what’s rightfully theirs” – embezzled nearly $1 million from ACORN back in 1999 and 2000.

How did ACORN handle the crime? By disguising it on the books as a loan from one of its contractors and letting Rathke’s family make restitution at the rate of $30,000 a year. (An anonymous donor reportedly has agreed to pick up the remaining $800,000 tab.)

Incredibly, ACORN kept Rathke on the payroll as a $38,000-a-year employee until as recently as last month – and only let him go when word of his fraud leaked to donors.

And, the Times reports, most of the people who covered up the embezzlement are still working for ACORN.

Actually, none of this really should surprise. After all, “fraud” has practically been ACORN’s middle name.

As Michelle Malkin wrote on these pages last month, the group recently settled the largest case of voter fraud in Washington state history – having submitted thousands of bogus voter-registration forms.

ACORN has been implicated in similar schemes in 14 other states – including Ohio, where a worker traded crack cocaine for fraudulent registrations.

Back in the ’80s and ’90s, ACORN’s tactics included trespassing, illegal seizure of private property, physical harassment, intimidation and outright extortion.

For example, in 1985, ACORN illegally seized 25 abandoned buildings owned by New York City and installed squatters as residents. A weak-kneed City Hall eventually gave the group title to the buildings – proving that crime can pay.

Amazingly, a large chunk of ACORN’s budget is provided by taxpayers.

Much of the rest comes from gullible foundations and groups like the United Federation of Teachers – which has partnered up with ACORN in efforts to kill Mayor Bloomberg’s school reform.

The Times reports that many of ACORN’s philanthropic benefactors have begun taking a close look at the group’s finances.

It’s long overdue.

Myles Brand, who fired basketball coach Bob Knight for bad behavior at Indiana University and later led a crackdown by college sports’ governing body on academic failure, died today of pancreatic cancer. He was 67.

Brand, the fourth president of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, also was credited with increasing commercial opportunities and broadening revenue distribution among member schools, while trying to make athletes more a part of the overall student body.

The keystone of his work was the NCAA’s Academic Progress Rate program, which measured the success of each athletic team in keeping athletes on track to graduate. Teams slipping behind faced penalties, including the loss of athletic scholarships.

“He led the effort to produce the most significant academic reform in the history of the NCAA,” said Dr. William Kirwan, chancellor of the University System of Maryland. “It really burrowed down to the individual coaches and programs, and made them responsible in a way that never existed before.”

The senior NCAA staff will run the national office until the executive committee names an interim president, spokeswoman Dana Thomas said in an e-mail.

Notre Dame Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick said that while Brand will be remembered as an academic reformer, what distinguished his presidency was his business sense.

“None of us appreciated in advance just how entrepreneurial he was,” Swarbrick said in an interview. “The number of acquisitions he made was remarkable. In one of the most conservative cultures, he encouraged us to maximize our revenue. It changed the NCAA’s risk profile.”

Revenue Jump

Brand became NCAA president in 2003. During his tenure, the association’s revenue rose to $661 million in 2008-09 from $437.8 million.

Limited liability corporations were established to acquire and run basketball’s National Invitation Tournament, operate a center for gauging athlete eligibility and provide education and certification for referees, umpires and other sports officials.

“Tax exempt doesn’t equate to, ‘Don’t make money,’” association spokesman Wally Renfro said. “Myles has always been critical drawing that distinction. He said we shouldn’t exploit the student, and shouldn’t become professional, but we should draw all the resources we can. Athletics has an educational value and we need to fund it.”

Myles Brand was born on May 17, 1942, in Brooklyn, New York. He played basketball and ran track in high school, and played a year of basketball and lacrosse at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

University President

Brand earned a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Rochester in 1967 and was serving as the provost and vice- president of academic affairs at Ohio University in 1989 when he was hired as president at the University of Oregon. In 1994, he left Oregon to become president at Indiana, where he stayed until becoming president of the NCAA on Jan. 1, 2003.

It irked Brand that after a long career as an academic reformer, he was often introduced as the man who fired Knight, who had won three national championships in 29 years with the Hoosiers while also gaining headlines with his temper.

Indiana began investigating Knight after former player Neil Reed said the coach choked him during a practice in 1997. Knight denied the claims until a videotape showed him grabbing Reed by the neck.

Brand slapped what he called a “zero-tolerance policy” on the coach and said Knight would be fired if he stepped out of line again. That line was crossed four months later, when Knight grabbed and cursed a student on the Bloomington, Indiana, campus who had addressed him by his last name.

‘Embarrassed’ School

Brand described Knight’s behavior as “defiant and hostile,” and said that over the four-month zero-tolerance period, Knight also had verbally abused a university administrator, made angry remarks that “embarrassed” the school and failed to attend several alumni events.

“No one incident rose to the level of dismissal of coach Knight,” Brand said when the firing was announced on Sept. 10, 2000. “But his persistent and troubling pattern of behavior had to be addressed.”

As Brand’s academic policies began to take hold and graduation rates climbed, he turned his attention to athletic department finances and the growth of salaries, expenses and state subsidies.

In 2005, he formed a task force to review athletic department spending and try to create fiscal barometers.

Too Much Debt

Brand said athletic departments were carrying too much debt and that schools were dipping into general funds to balance sports budgets.

Athletic budgets were increasing 8 percent-12 percent annually, compared to 3 percent-4 percent for university budgets, he said during an interview in 2006. He called for greater accountability and faculty oversight.

Brand at the same time acknowledged that the NCAA couldn’t legally force individual schools to limit their spending.

“There’s no hammer,” he said. “That’s what makes fiscal reform so difficult.”

Critics say Brand could have used his position to encourage college football programs to hire more minorities, and to redistribute a greater share of the Bowl Championship Series payout to smaller conferences.

Brand couldn’t attend the NCAA convention this year because of his illness. He issued a statement Jan. 17, 2009 saying he was being treated for pancreatic cancer and that the long-term prognosis was “not good.”

Brand is survived by his wife, Margaret, and a son, Josh. Funeral arrangements are pending, the NCAA said in a news release.

The Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey attraction, while having a sort of terrible name, will use "entirely new technology to bring the magic, characters and stories of Harry Potter to life in ways never before experienced." For more traditional thrills, there will be rides based on the Hippogriff training flight and the Tri-Wizards Tournament. Adding a stamp of authenticity, Universal Studios has enlisted the films' production designer, Stuart Craig, and art director, Alan Gilmore, to help design the place.

The truth is, while any large-scale endeavors like this seem like bald-faced money-grabs, there are plenty of Harry Potter fans out there who will probably ditch their Disneyland season passes in favor of making an annual trip to Harry Potter World. I mentioned to my girlfriend that I felt like I was watching The Ultimate Fighter when they flash up the stats of the fighters.

Admonish Definition, WASHINGTON – Democratic leaders are planning a House vote early next week to admonish Republican Rep. Joe Wilson if he does not apologize on the House floor for yelling “You lie!” during President Barack Obama’s health care address to Congress.

National attention from the heckling episode has money pouring into Wilson’s campaign treasury and that of his 2010 Democratic challenger. Wilson had raised more than $700,000 since the incident as of Friday, according to the National Republican Congressional Committee. His opponent, Rob Miller, had received more than $1 million from 25,000 donors nationwide, said his campaign manager, Lindsay Zoeller.

Democratic leaders initially showed mixed interest in punishing Wilson. But they decided at a meeting late Thursday that they probably will propose a resolution of disapproval early next week if he doesn’t apologize to Congress, said Brendan Daly, a spokesman for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

While not a formal censure or reprimand, the resolution, if passed as expected, would put Congress on record as condemning Wilson’s conduct.

Wilson, who was criticized by Republicans and Democrats for his outburst, told Obama he was sorry shortly after the incident Wednesday night. But he has refused requests from both parties to apologize on the House floor. Wilson’s office says the congressman considers his initial apology sufficient.

Obama said Thursday he accepted Wilson’s apology, telling reporters that “we all make mistakes.” The White House said it considered the matter over, and Pelosi, D-Calif., initially said she wanted move on.

But many Democrats remain angry and have pressed for further action. They say Wilson clearly violated House rules.

“This is about how elected officials should be conducting themselves in the well of the U.S. House of Representatives,” Rep. James Clyburn of South Carolina, the third-ranking House Democrat, said in an interview Friday.

The White House had no comment on the plan for a House resolution.

Wilson also has taken a more combative tone since his apology.

In a video posted on his campaign Web site, he said he let his emotions get away from him during Obama’s speech but added, “I will not be muzzled. I will speak up and speak loudly.”

Wilson said his critics want to use the incident to silence opponents of health care reform.

“I need your help now,” he said, soliciting donations.

In 2008, Wilson took 54 percent of the vote in beating Miller, a former Marine.

For their rematch next year, Miller already has raised more money in the past two days than the roughly $625,000 he spent for that race.

Wilson spent nearly $1.3 million for the 2008 cycle. The health care industry — among South Carolina’s largest economic sectors — has traditionally been his top contributor.

His top 20 career donors include the American Hospital Association, the Lexington Medical Center and the American Dental Association, according to the Center for Responsive Politics.

Wilson shouted “You lie!” after Obama said in his address to Congress that illegal immigrants would not be eligible for low-cost health care.

The Democratic proposals explicitly prohibit spending any federal money to help illegal immigrants get health care. Still, Republicans say there aren’t sufficient citizenship verification requirements to ensure illegal immigrants are excluded.

Wilson, a former state senator elected to Congress in 2001, is known as a mild-mannered lawmaker with hard-line conservative views. But he has been confrontational in the past.

In 2003, Wilson called it “unseemly” and a “smear” for the mixed-race daughter of Sen. Strom Thurmond, Essie Mae Washington-Williams, to identify the longtime South Carolina senator as her father after his death. After a public outcry, he said he had the utmost respect for Washington-Williams.

Wilson returned to South Carolina on Friday morning and doesn’t plan to make any public appearances Friday or Saturday, his spokesman said.

About 40 people gathered Friday evening outside Wilson’s West Columbia office for a rally promoted on blogs. Wilson did not attend. But those gathered said they wanted to show support amid what they called attacks on Wilson’s character, and praised him as a hero.

Attendees wore shirts that read “Palin 2012″ and “Dare to say NO to Obama and Socialism!”

“Joe’s my hero. He said what we all wanted to say to Barack Obama,” said William Browning, 55.

“Maybe Joe shouldn’t have said it in that venue, but he’s apologized,” Browning said. “I hope he sticks to his guns. If they reprimand him, so be it.”
