An earthquake has hit Haiti just over a week after a deadly 7.0 magnitude earthquake hit the poor Caribbean nation killing at least 100,000 people.

A 6.0 eartquake has rocked Haiti January 20 2010 in the early morning.

The United States Geological Survey says a powerful 6.1 prelimentary earthquake hit Port-au-Prince. The earthquake was very shallow, perhaps just 9 kilomters deep.

The new Haiiti earthuqake hit 59 km (36 miles) to the South West of Port-Au-Prince where most of the damage from the January 12 2010 earthquake is located.

The magnitude 6.1 January 20 2010 earthquake hit at 6.04 am local time, waking up millions of Haitians, many of whom now call the streets, soccer grounds and parks home in the wake of the devastation.

The new Haiti earthquake was likely to cause more damage and hamper rescue and relief efforts underway by the US military, the UN, countless other governments and non-government relief organizations like the Red Cross and Unecef.

Journalists in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, there to cover the January 12 earthquake aftermath and humanitarian disaster said they ran for their lives out of buildings.

A producer for American network CNN said on social networking site Twitter: "wow...just felt the biggest aftershock since I've been in #haiti. knocked me out of bed...felt like a wave....my heart is pounding. so scary.""

TV news anchor Anderson Cooper said: "The building we're staying in was swaying. I leapt out of bed and ran to the doorway. My colleagues were in the hallway outside in various states of undress. Hearing screaming from the steet"

Fellow CNN anchor Soledad O'Brien wrote: "A bunch of us in the hall, others sprinted to the courtyard. Hard to type w hands shaking. Amazing to see everyone sprint out of the hotel. It was scary as hell, we ran for our lives."
