Ricky Martin Comes Out, The Latino pop star, is “finally blowing the doors off the closet”, as USA Today puts it. He has said that he’s gay. “The word “happiness” takes on a new meaning for me as of today,” he said. “I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man.”
Why is he only revealing his homosexuality now, after more than 10 years in the music business? In his words: “fear and insecurity”, the fear of losing his career. It illustrates the entertainment industry’s double standards – for all that those in “the business” like to flaunt their soft-heartedness. Showbiz liberals lambast conservative institutions like the Catholic Church on the grounds of hypocrisy. But really is it not showbusiness that is the repository of all that’s most hypocritical?
In most walks of life these days it’s not an issue if a person happens to be homosexual, as it might have been a generation ago. Only not in Hollywood or – so it seems – pop music. Those industries require their performers – not producers – to pretend to be heterosexual. Even better if they can hang around in public with nubile females as Ricky Martin did. Either that, or risk career suicide.
