Like the Sopranos before them, the Sons of Anarchy motorcycle club has little use for the basic covenants that keep society civil.

They obey the laws they want to obey. They are indifferent to the fate of anyone, innocent or guilty, who stands between them and what they seek. They corrupt the town of Charming just by their presence.

Yet slowly, over the first season, the characters developed enough trappings of humanity that their dramas and intrigues became interesting.

Club leader Clay (Ron Perlman) remains the hardest and coldest, and while that still doesn’t make him the most sociopathic, he needs all his iciness tonight to deal with Opie (Ryan Hurst).

Opie is supposed to be dead because Clay ordered him killed. But the triggermen botched the job, killing Opie’s wife, Donna, instead.

That makes for an awkward situation. But the Sons, like the Sopranos, have a protocol for this sort of thing, and it is observed.

The club members’ broader problem is that the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is putting heat on their gun-running operation.

So they need to make some financial adjustments, prodded by Jax (Charlie Hunnam), who remains the most intriguing wild card in this deck.

Jax is the son of John Teller, who founded the club and was dismayed at the outlaw direction it took under Clay. Jax works with Clay now, but he’s also finding more pieces of the club’s back story that Clay would just as soon remained hidden.

Meanwhile, Jax’s mother, Gemma (Katey Sagal), who is now Clay’s paramour, continues to weave a fascinating character from some strange alternate-universe combination of Eva Braun and a soccer mom.
