The magnitude 6.1 January 20 2010 earthquake hit at 6.04 am local time, waking up millions of Haitians, many of whom now call the streets, soccer grounds and parks home in the wake of the devastation.

The new Haiti earthquake was likely to cause more damage and hamper rescue and relief efforts underway by the US military, the UN, countless other governments and non-government relief organizations like the Red Cross and Unecef.

TV news anchor Anderson Cooper said: "The building we're staying in was swaying. I leapt out of bed and ran to the doorway. My colleagues were in the hallway outside in various states of undress. Hearing screaming from the steet"
